For countless years I have struggled with mental health and have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Through these years I have learned a lot about mental health and have spoken to many incredible people that also struggle with issues. It is time that we talk about it. I am not ashamed of my diagnosis and I would love to help those that are. These pieces are incredibly emotional to me and I hope that you feel some emotional healing joining me on this journey. These pieces are currently on display in Renewed Resilience, a Mental Health Facility on Mainstreet, Leduc, in my Mental Health Gallery. Prints will also be available soon.
This piece reveals how many masks we layer upon ourselves, though our true selves are beautiful. I "wore" so many masks when until recently, as I always believed that in order to be liked I had to be someone else. So I would pick up little things that made people laugh or state a compliment and would try to replicated it in myself until I did not have a clue who I truly was. I was so afraid that no one would like the real me. It took me going to New Zealand by myself, which suddenly terrified me, "who do people like here?! Who should I be?!", so I tried to be simply...me. It was terrifying and incredible and I realized that I wasn't so bad after all, in fact, I was the best version of myself!
You will always be the most beautiful version of yourself.

Though we can sometimes be pulled deep into the dark pit of depression, loneliness or defeat, if we have hope, we will find our way back into the light. There is always hope. Hope for a better day and emotional healing. It is always there, a little flickering candle in the stifling, seemingly impenetrable darkness, it may just need a little help igniting into a healing flame.

Probably the most accurate of my feelings when I am depressed, this represents the feeling of being pulled slowly under the heavy, dark depths of depression that becomes a comfort. I allow it to envelope me like a giant, suffocating blanket, until I feel content with nothing at all.

Through my life I have struggled with my body. Weight gain that would come on quickly due to underlying health issues where in turn people would call me "a dinosaur", "fat", "what happened to you? You used to be pretty" or "too bad you're not pretty like your sister". All my life I have heard these hurtful words, which in turn made my hate myself and my body. When I hear that someone is being bullied because of how they look or just because someone is looking for an outlet for their own self-hatred, it aggrieves me to no end. Everyone is beautiful and I truly whole-heartedly believe that what is inside counts and it is how you treat others, especially how you treat yourself that makes us beautiful. This piece shows the hurtful words attacking her mind as the shadow of her ever-changing body drains her emotions and weighs her down.

Darkness My Old Friend...I have struggled with depression since my teen years and was only brave enough to accept this diagnosis in my late twenties. It took me many years to finally accept help...once my world had already crumbled upon me. Depression felt to me as an immensely heavy creature made of darkness draped over me. I began to feel almost comforted by its weight and would curl up into its blackness to disappear for days. I have hidden a face in this painting to represent him.
Today I am blessed with medication, a healthy lifestyle, professional help and good supports that do help immensely, though some days the darkness does still slink in, coiling it's fingers around my heart to stifle my energy and drag me into the depths with it. Never fight this battle alone. Find someone that understands or at least will listen to you and validate your feelings. You are not alone.

The anxiety. The fear. The utter loneliness. We have all felt these at least once during this past year and I believe that everyone has struggled with their mental health during 2020. Now more than ever, it is important to talk about mental health and to support each other. This piece depicts my feelings during this past year. Feeling trapped in a small box with stifling darkness. Alone. Yet I have found light and hope in kindness, helping others and being grateful for the many things and people in my life. Hold onto that hope and those blessings close to your heart and it will continue to grow.

After painting so many emotional pieces, I needed to paint some JOY! I have truly been blessed with so much joy in my life and thanks to those "Dark Days", I am so grateful for the joy that I have. I do wholeheartedly believe that I owe my extreme joy in average situations to having other days full of depression and darkness. The light is never brighter than when you have seen the pits of despair.

Everyone thinks that women are only "allowed" to be angry when it is our "time of the month". Boy...that makes me angry. Everyone should be allowed to express emotions and that includes anger. People fear anger and they fear being seen as “angry” in public, though it is an emotion as well and if we don’t let it out sometimes it will fester and eat us from the inside-out. As long as it does not hurt others, show your colours, express even the darkest emotions. Let it out!

Brain injuries are described as "invisible injuries", seeing as the symptoms are usually invisible to others though completely debilitating and life altering to those suffering them. This is dedicated to my Mother who is striving despite a brain injury. This piece depicts the damage to her "hair" (which resembles the cerebellum/brain), causing vision deficits and aphasia (represented by the blackness). The colours surrounding her represent the army that it takes on the road to healing, forming the butterfly of the new person that comes out on the other end. Never the same; forever altered for better or worse…

It is difficult watching your friends and family have their first children, then their second...then their third when you sit with a broken uterus and debilitating, vomit-inducing, black-out pain from holding onto your 2% chance of having your own. It feels as though there is a gaping hole inside you, splitting and crackling up your body leaving you confused and constantly wanting. I had not spoken about my issues with fertility for the last 10 years, though I do not understand why when so many others are in the same boat. Finally, after hearing “Why don’t you guys hurry up and have a baby? What are you waiting or?” for the last time, I decided to share this issue. Having a child is not always a choice or an option.

That feeling of stepping into a party, though filled with familiar faces, and feeling your vision tunnel and darken, your stomach begin to twist and turn and your head begin to throb. Anxiety. It might be an airplane ride, sitting in the back of a car with the windows closed or even walking down the street; whatever makes you feel anxiety or with the constant feeling of fear and heightened awareness. I did not realize that I was in constant anxiety and how much it was affecting my life until I spoke to a professional and realized that what I was feeling was not normal life. Anxiety can be debilitating but you do not have to suffer through it.

Did you know that kiwi birds are nearly blind, flightless rare birds from New Zealand? I had the distinct pleasure to view a habitat for them when I visited NZ and found them completely fascinating!
